The Master in International Tourism at Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) is pleased to announce the second edition of the residential course “Event Management”, realized in collaboration with the Ente Regionale per lo Sviluppo Locarnese e Vallemaggia.

This intensive program will be held in Muralto/Locarno on October 21-22 and November 14-16, 2024 and will be led by Rob Davidson, an esteemed expert in conferences and business travel, with over twenty years of experience. Mr. Davidson has authored eight books and numerous articles on these subjects and regularly speaks at international conferences.

Participants will gain in-depth knowledge of the essential strategies and practices in event management. In detail, the course will cover:

  • The role of events in the fields of business, culture, sports, politics and the not-for-profit sectors. For each type of event, the roles and responsibilities of the principal stakeholders are examined, broadly categorised in terms of demand (participants), intermediaries (organisers, events agencies), and suppliers (caterers, venues, performers, players, speakers, et cetera).
  • The design, planning and implementation of each type of event: establishing objectives; choice of destination and venue; content; catering; security; marketing; finance, including sponsorship; and the evaluation of events’ success. The experiential concept of the ‘Participant Journey’ is emphasised – optimising the quality of the participants’ experience before, during and after the events attended, with particular focus on the use of technology to optimise their experiences.
  • The potential impacts, positive and negative, of events on the natural environment, the economy, the people and culture, the political realm, the branding; and the tourism industry of the places that host the events. Measures to maximise the positive impacts and minimise the negative impacts.

Furthermore, the lectures and class discussions will be supplemented by:

  • the review of real-life case-studies, demonstrating successes and failures
  • presentations by guest-speakers who are active stakeholders in the local events sector
  • visits to places of interest with relevance to the local events industry.

The course fee is CHF 2,000, covering classes, site visits, coffee breaks, and business lunches.

Interested participants should send a motivation letter to Lorenzo Cantoni at lorenzo.cantoni@usi.ch by September 25, 2024.

A certificate of attendance will be awarded to participants who attend at least 80% of the course.
