The report “Fashion and Cultural Tourism – Connecting Creators, Businesses and Destinations”, produced by Professor Lorenzo Cantoni and published in collaboration between UN Tourism and Università della Svizzera italiana (USI), explores how fashion can serve as a powerful channel for cultural expression and sustainable tourism development. The report is also featured on the official website of UN Tourism, highlighting its relevance at the international level.

With a particular focus on indigenous groups, small-scale creators, and local businesses, the publication demonstrates how fashion can go far beyond consumerism. When rooted in place and tradition, fashion-related products act as gateways to cultural heritage and identity. Tourists who purchase these items in their destination of origin engage with stories that transcend the object itself, fostering more authentic travel experiences.

Based on 11 case studies, the report identifies innovative practices and provides practical recommendations for collaboration between fashion designers, entrepreneurs, and tourism professionals. Equally important, the report emphasizes the need for greater tourist awareness − inviting travellers to approach fashion not only as a style statement, but also as a cultural encounter that requires respect, understanding, and engagement.
